The South Madison Farmers’ Market is located on the South side of Madison, Wisconsin and is one of the community’s greatest assets. Fresh, organic produce, flower bouquets, meat, and baked goods are just a small taste of what you might find at the market. You will also find an accessible and enjoyable community gathering place where everyone is invited to come and stay awhile!
The diverse population of the South side of Madison means diversity in the products you will see. There is something sure to please everyone’s culinary preferences. You will find many specialty products at the market that are not available at your local supermarket. We also give a fair market price for farm fresh produce so prices are also sure to please everyone.
The market provides consumers with information on organic produce, locally grown fresh produce and their benefits. Monthly events planned around produce in season, such as strawberries, corn, and tomatoes provide the opportunity to sample farm fresh Wisconsin produce, enjoy local musicians, and visit with friends and neighbors. We’re focused on nutrition, community, diversity, and friendship more than anything else and we plan to keep it that way!
At the market drop-off site, you can bring us your spent coffee grounds, eggshells, and appropriate vegetable and fruit scraps so they can be composted. Food scraps drop-off will be available from 2:00pm to 6:00pm on Tuesdays.
You can bring coffee grounds, eggshells, raw fruits, raw vegetables, and other similar scraps.
Do not bring meat, bones, baked goods, prepared foods (including pastas), compostable plastics, paper products, grease, or dairy products (including cheese).
Read more about what you can, and cannot, bring in for composting to the food scraps drop-off sites on the Streets Division’s Food Scraps website.
Staff at the food scraps drop-off tent will be there to help you, too, if you have any questions.
Are there other food scraps drop-off sites? Yes! There are many free food scraps drop-off locations in the City of Madison this year.
Besides the South Madison Farmers’ Market location, there are two more city-sponsored sites. Also on Tuesdays, you can bring scraps to the Eastside Farmers’ Market. On Saturdays, you can bring scraps to the Westside Community Market. More details about the City of Madison sites can be found on our food scraps website.
Starting on June 1, 2025, Dane County Waste and Renewables will have two food scraps drop-off sites in Madison(link is external).
The Dane County sites are located on the north side of Madison in Warner Park and near the Henry Vilas Zoo parking lot off S. Orchard St. You need to pre-register on the County website to receive a code to use the Dane County drop-off kiosks. More details about the Dane County locations can be found at their website(link is external).
We want to compost 40,000 pounds from the farmers’ market drop-off sites, which is the weight of a small herd of bison(link is external).
So far this market season, we have collected two bison worth of scraps!
You can show your support, and join the herd, by dropping off your scraps and picking up a free bison sticker at one of the City food scrap drop-off sites. Stickers are available at the Eastside, South Madison, and Westside Community markets.
We hope to see you there.
